Preamble:

Vidya Prasarak Mandal (VPM), Thane is an educational trust started in 1935 to provide good education to the people of Thane. From a small beginning, it has grown into a large group of institutions, teaching around 15,000 students on the Thane campus. These institutions offer education from kindergarten to post- graduation in science, arts, law, and technical courses. VPM has recently opened an engineering college at Velneshwar in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, to serve rural students. Most of VPM’s colleges are affiliated with Mumbai University.

In 1956, a young doctor, Dr. V. N. Bedekar, joined VPM and became its President. He was inspired by Lokmanya Tilak’s vision and wanted to create a centre of knowledge in Thane. After his passing, his son Dr. Vijay Bedekar took over and has continued the mission with great leadership and vision.

B. N. Bandodkar College of Science (Autonomous), Thane, under VPM, is committed to providing high- quality education. It was one of the first colleges to encourage research culture among teachers and students. Since 2004, a special committee called “Science Square” has been working to inspire students to take part in research. As per the suggestions of NAAC, a formal Research Committee was formed in June 2009. The college has introduced several policies to support long-term and meaningful research.

The management helps and guides teachers to prepare research proposals and send them to funding agencies like UGC, DBT, DST, and Mumbai University. Many mini-research projects have been started as part of these efforts. These projects help students to learn research skills, with teachers guiding them as mentors.

The main aim of the college's research policy is to support its vision and mission. It focuses on research areas that are useful for academics, society, and the country’s progress. It also wants to develop a scientific way of thinking and a research mind set in students.

The college follows all rules and guidelines of UGC and Mumbai University and takes care to follow ethical and safety standards in research. The policy gives a strong foundation for all research activities. As the famous quote says, “Research is to see what everybody else has seen and to think what nobody else has thought.”

The college also believes that teachers should use their knowledge to help students and society. It supports the idea that every person can learn and grow. To improve teaching and research, the college conducts morientation and refresher programs. Teachers also work on research projects, publish their findings in good journals, and even get patents.

To promote research, the college organizes talks, training sessions, and workshops. It also encourages students and teachers to attend such programs in other colleges. Topics like scientific writing, intellectual property rights (IPR), and how to write research proposals are also taught.

The European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) is an International ‘nucleotide sequence repository’ providing free and unrestricted access to annotated DNA and RNA sequences . It also stores complementary information such as experimental procedures, details of sequence assembly and other details related to the sequencing project . It is produced and maintained by the European Bioinformatics Institute and is a member of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC) along with the DNA Data Bank of Japan and GenBank . After submission of the data by genome sequencing centers, individual scientists or patent offices, the data is carefully curated and accession numbers (unique identifiers which permanently identify sequences in the database) are assigned to the deposited sequences. Accession numbers are communicated to authors and are required by many research journals before manuscripts are accepted.
