About Department

The department of Chemistry was established in June 1969 and it is one of the largest department in the College. The B. Sc. Chemistry programme commences in 1969, and M.Sc. Organic Chemistry programme (by paper) commenced in 1983 followed by M.Sc. Chemistry (by research), programme in 2004. Our research laboratory is recognized by Mumbai University, Mumbai for Ph. D. course since 2006.

To date, the department has produced around 3300 graduates (B.Sc. Chemistry) and around 400 post graduates (M.Sc. Organic Chemistry) students. Since the start of Ph. D. programme 07 research scholar awarded with the doctorate degree.

The department has a broad canvas of research activities, ranging from basic as well as applied research, and has contributed significantly by publishing more than 100 research papers and patents. The faculty members of the department are actively engaged in research across various fields, such as Thermodynamics, Computational Chemistry, Catalysis, Heterocyclic synthesis, Green Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Organometallic and Material science are the areas of ongoing research in the Department.

The faculty members have published their research in National and International Journals with high Impact Factors and also presented research work in various National and International conferences. In the Department, one faculty member is Mumbai University recognized research guides for Ph. D. programme and three faculty members are Mumbai University recognized research guides for M. Sc. by research programme.

Faculty members have completed 02 minor research projects with a total grant of 50,000/- Rs. sponsored by various funding agencies. The department has MOUs with different institutes. The department has adequate infrastructure facility, which includes well-equipped research laboratory for research students, classrooms to conduct classes, and four laboratories to conduct U.G. and P.G. practicals. The department has an instrument facility FTIR spectrophotometer, densitometer, viscometer, ultrasonic interferometer, a digital UV-Visible spectrophotometer, a Microwave oven, a Digital Flame Photometer, Colorimeters, Potentiometers, Refractometers, a Vacuum oven, Incubators, Vacuum pumps, etc.

The alumni of the Department are holding higher positions in Academic institutions, Industries (R and D, ADL, Q. C., Q.A.), Civil services, National Laboratories and Institutions within and outside the country, and many alumni are teachers, professor posted in various institutions.
