Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology at VPM’s B. N. Bandodkar College of Science, Thane, was established in 1969 and has since become one of the most reputable departments within the institution. 

Historical Development

  • Foundation: The department began its journey in 1969 when the college first started functioning
    under the Vidya Prasarak Mandal (VPM).
  • Research Legacy: It has a research background spanning over 40 years, offering specialized
    studies in animal biology, including physiology, ecology, genetics, and molecular biology.
  • Infrastructure: The department maintains three dedicated laboratories for its Undergraduate (UG),
    Postgraduate (PG), and Ph.D. research programs.
  • Key Achievements and Milestones
    • New Species Discovery: Dr. Amol Patwardhan, under the guidance of Dr. R. P. Athalye,
      discovered four new species and one new genus of click beetles. These findings were published in
      the international journal Genus (Poland).
    • Student Academic Success: The department has consistently produced university-level rankers:
      • Abhishek Rane: 1st Rank in T.Y.B.Sc. Zoology (2006-07).
      • Pranali Gaonkar: 2nd Rank in T.Y.B.Sc. Zoology (2004-05).
      • Sonal Salvi: 3rd Rank in T.Y.B.Sc. Zoology (2007-08).
    • Research Grants and Projects:
      • The department is a key participant in the DBT Star College Scheme (selected in 2015), through which students undertake mini-research projects such as studies on “Dentition and jaw structure in fishes” and “Milk adulterants”.
      • Ph.D. students have received awards at the National Science Congress, including prizes in photography contests focused on science.
