The Research Centre of Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences at V.P.M.'s B.N. Bandodkar College of Science (Autonomous), Thane, is known for its strong academic work and new ideas. Our centre has experienced teachers, good lab facilities, and a friendly environment for research. Because our college is autonomous, we have the freedom to create a Ph.D. program that is even better than the minimum rules given by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Our course is carefully planned to help students gain the right skills and knowledge to start and complete their PhD with full confidence.

Our Ph.D. course is designed to be multidisciplinary, meaning it connects knowledge from different science subjects. This helps students understand various research methods and ways of thinking. It builds a complete and balanced research mind-set.

The course runs over the first two semesters and carries a total of 12 credits, divided into three papers (each of 4 credits):

Paper 1 – Research Methodology
This paper teaches how to start research – from finding a good research topic, reviewing existing studies, forming a hypothesis, and planning the right method to carry out research work carefully and correctly.

Paper 2 – Advanced Subject Knowledge
This paper focuses on in-depth learning in the student’s subject. It includes training in modern lab equipment and techniques used in today’s research.

Paper 3 – Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Ethics
This paper helps students understand the legal and moral rules they must follow while doing research, including how to protect their work.

Each paper also includes a special unit to improve skills like using instruments, analyzing data, and thinking critically – all important for a researcher.

Along with these papers, we also offer non-credit modules in communication skills and computer applications, which are very helpful in writing research papers, giving presentations, and preparing a thesis.

This PhD coursework is not just a requirement – it is a life-changing experience. It gives our students the strong base they need to start their research confidently, with broad knowledge and a professional approach.

do meaningful work in their subject and to help society positively.

Attendance Requirements
PhD students must attend all lectures and take part in journal clubs, guest lectures, seminars, workshops, and
industrial visits organized by the college or research centre. Attendance will be checked as per the rules
given in the college’s examination and evaluation system.
During the coursework, students are not allowed to take up jobs or other assignments outside the
college.
